IN 155 - First Year Seminar: From 1492 through Black Lives Matter: The Politics of Race in the United StatesCredits: 4 Explores the long history of settler colonialism and White supremacy starting with European conquest in 1492. It examines the sociocultural construction of “race” and the historical legacy of institutional racism. Students discuss contemporary debates about racial identities in popular culture, politics, and the media. The course provides an in-depth analysis of the prison industrial complex and its impact on Black and Latino communities. Finally, students study grassroots movements and their struggles for racial justice.
