IN 318 - Worldwide Underground: Hip Hop as Resistance Around the GlobeCredits: 4 Since emerging in the 1970s, hip hop has been celebrated as an innovative art form and a source of empowerment for marginalized communities. It has developed into a vibrant subculture with a loyal following for the various ways it engages social, political, and cultural conditions. This course explores the global origins of hip hop; hip hop’s elements and aesthetics; hip hop as resistance to racial, gender, and economic oppression in the US; and the adoption of hip hop by marginalized groups around the world as a form of resistance. Case studies include: South Africa, France, Great Britain, Cuba, and Japan.
