PH 308 - Moral Sentiments

Credits: 4
We often make moral judgments based on our emotions: something just “feels right” or “feels wrong.” We also know how easily our emotions can be swayed by trivial matters. Current research shows that our perceptions of people can be shaped by “implicit” or unconscious biases, leading to treatment of others that may be unjust. This course focuses on the role of feelings and emotions in the moral sphere and whether this is avoidable or inevitable. Students compare philosophical theories that put feelings and emotions at the center of morality with others that insist on the centrality of reason and rationality in moral judgment.
