SO 360 - Sociology of Insiders and OutsidersCredits: 4 Human societies have always been divided into those groups that have power, authority, access to resources and privilege, and those that are systematically denied these things. This course examines the structures and processes that create these groups. Attention is paid to outsider groups defined by race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and ability, as well as specific insider groups defined by whiteness, straightness, and masculinity. Students also examine the exclusionary attitudes and behaviors that reproduce group identities, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism.
