Over the past four decades, the medium of video games has grown from a niche hobby to a multibillion dollar entertainment industry. As software tools become increasingly more accessible, video games have also become platforms for self-expression, tools for education, and a space for diverse content creators to tell their stories. With a focus on hands-on gameplay, students explore the relationship between hardware, software, and society, empowering them to understand the places both iconic and recent video games occupy within the media and cultural landscapes.
