HI 207 - Japanese History and Aesthetics: A Frog Jumps InCredits: 4 Examines the origins and development of Japanese history and culture from the earliest records to the present. Students begin with a general overview of Japanese language, history, and geography, and then consider the fundamental themes of Japanese history while reading key works on Japanese literature, religion, and the arts. Throughout the semester, students revisit the contention that Japan’s philosophy of material culture provides the best lens for understanding its history. Students are required to complete a number of short written reflections on the readings. The semester culminates with students analyzing an object of material culture and creating an original artwork of their own.
