HI 213 - Southeast Asian History

Credits: 4
Thematic history of modern Southeast Asia begins with an overview of the region’s diverse geography, cultures, and colonial history, followed by four case studies: the Philippine Revolution; the Vietnam Wars; Resource extraction in Indonesia, and the oppression of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. In approaching these cases we’ll use primary documents, historical and anthropological studies, literature, and film to explore how imperialism, superpower politics, and global capitalism have rubbed up against complex local expressions of solidarity. Throughout the semester, students will write reflections on the readings. Their work will culminate in a video presentation on a subject of their choosing.
