JR 331 - The Independent Magazine

Emerson College took over The Independent Magazine in 2020 as a student-run publication covering films outside the mainstream, including international, experimental, documentaries, and shorts. The publication’s goal promotes knowledge of the marginal spaces in movie-making by having students cover the rich variety of festivals, awards, student work, and underground cinema. Students manage the weekly publication schedule and have the opportunity to write news and reviews of film festivals and newly released films. Staff members oversee professional-level journalism and online publishing covering a broad array of movie topics, including stylistic innovations, crossover titles, and historical references.
