JR 651 - Evolving Journalism & Media

This course explores today’s news media landscape, analyzes the paradigm shifts of the recent past (e.g., introduction of USA Today and CNN), examines cultural context to understand how successful news media thrive in a society where there is information overload. Students analyze journalism and media content across multiple channels, their audiences, organizations, company structures, monetization challenges, economics and evolving technology to include successes and failures. The course includes an examination of independent media entities (ProPublica, Pink, Mother Jones, INN, etc.) and solo journalist newsletters such as Popular Information.
