PB 630 - Publishing Law

(Semester Varies)
Exposes students to the many ways law influences publishing decisions. Covers contracts, copyright (including permissions and fair use) and trademark, First Amendment law (including defamation, invasion of privacy, and rights of publicity), and subsidiary rights and licensing. Students participate in simulated contract negotiations from the perspectives of both publisher and literary agent/author. While the course focuses on the book industry, it provides a foundation of knowledge that can be applied in any publishing workplace.
