CA 410 - Lit for Laughs: Humor and Comedic Literature

How do you tell a long comedic story? What kind of language is best suited to setting up a joke, making a punchline land, and keeping the audience enthralled in between? How do you create a funny character and what’s the best way to craft a funny scene? This course delves into the stories, essays, and novels of humor writers such as David Sedaris, Samantha Irby, and Charles Yu. Students examine the structure of their works while scrutinizing their writing and jokes on a sentence level. The final paper is a comedic story or a paper analyzing one or more texts studied over the semester.
