MU 256 - Deconstructing 20th-Century Art Music

Credits: 4
Introduces Western art music of the 20th century to non-music majors. Students chronologically explore diverse styles and genres of music as composed by a panorama of vibrant musical personalities in the 20th century. Students’ goal is to demystify some of the construction techniques and resulting sounds that have currently expanded our definition of “e-music.” Included in their discovery are discussions on the interplay of music, literature, and the visual arts as reactive and motivating forces on current 21st-century aesthetics. Students close the course by investigating current trends in art music.
