JR 300 - History of the Alternative Press

This is a survey course on the history and role of the non-mainstream press in America. It examines the traditions and practices of the dissenting press in the past. It also considers the work and mediums of the alternative press in these times. The course reviews both the sector of the alternative press dedicated to serving underdog communities and the sector focused on conservative populist interests. The topics are studied through historical texts, articles, films, and other media. Finally, the course requires work on a common project on a public affairs issue.Fulfills the Journalism Diversity requirement.
